In one of my recent lectures, we were looking at ideas of persuasion and marketing methods. The lecturer (who is a genius) brought up the issue with Tesco moving their office to the Cayman Islands to avoid paying 1 billion pounds of tax.

Tesco are currently offering computers for school vouchers – collect the vouchers and take them to the school, school benefits by getting more computers.

Not necessarily

They offer 20 inch imacs – roughly retailing at £750.

In order to get 1 of these imacs. the school needs to collect 26,500 vouchers.

This is the equivalent to £260,500 of shopping in order to get the vouchers.

If Tesco were happy to pay their tax in this country, it could be spent on the computers. This would buy 1,333,333 computers.

There are approximately 24,000 primary schools in this country. This means that each school could get 56 computers out of this £1,000,000 tax.

In order to get 55 imacs from vouchers, parents have to spend £14,588,000 on shopping!

Make your own choice.

Who is ruling us exactly?

I found myself watching the parliament channel this morning showing Prime Ministers questions. It occurred to me after about 5 minutes that I was basically just watching a few people who are lazy and overpaid having an argument. Surely that’s no different from reality tv such as Big Brother.

Watching MP’s sitting in the commons is almost the same thing as watching E4 live BB. It’s also quite depressing that people are more likely to believe celebrities on tv and agree with their opinions than politicians, but politicians are the ones creating the laws and ruling this country whereas celebrities from reality tv shows technically have no power. Yet the tabloid press and mainstream tv channels have so much power over us. It’s terrifying really.

It also reminds me of Nickelback’s latest single. I have do love my music, Nickelback are quite a good band but I really don’t understand their latest single ‘Rockstar’. I’m not sure if it’s serious or an ironic dig at these ‘celebrities’ in America who do the kind of things which the lyrics refer to. I can’t believe some people actually aspire to live like the ‘MTV generation’ where there are just hollywood film stars and popstars and rappers, and this drug, drink culture materialistic where when you appear on Cribs you’re considered really cool and rich. Where you have to have at least a swimming pool and 3 cars otherwise you look poor.

Ok rant over.
Did anyone see the Extra’s christmas special last year. Especially this scene. Spectacular.

Nearly the end of term – wahey. I can’t wait till easter – hopefully I’ll be able to get out and take lots of piccies amongst other things. I’ve got 2 essays to write as well.

What else have I been doing…? – Not a lot worth writing about. I’m going swimming tomorrow morning first thing. It mite be quiet at 8.30 in the morning. I will definitely benefit from the exercise. I’ve got rather unfit this last year with my only real exercise being walking. Ok it’s fair to say I do a lot of walking but less lectures meant less going into uni and I haven’t been doing much else outside uni stuff this year. I always wondered as a child how adults managed to sit around for hours on end chatting and drinking tea etc. I now realise it’s really very easy. I almost miss the days of having go and run somewhere or climb a tree or play football when we went out or even days at home during the holidays but it’s nice being more chilled and in control of your own energy levels.

I’ve also updated the photo page of this blog with a link to my new gallery.

I’ve decided there’s much more space on there and it’s so much easier to put most of my photos on there rather than putting them straight onto pages in wordpress.

Feel free to check them out. As I love wildlife photography and naturey greeny stuff in general there is a lot of that but a few other things as well. Comments greatly appreciated.

Wide awake!

How is everyone else on this fine saturday morning? I seemed to have woken up a little earlier than expected considering I can have a lie in this morning – thanks or… no thanks to rude and forgetful housemates.

However I’m feeling there’s no need to be grumpy on a lovely morning. I felt the need to smile.

I thought I would list 5 things that make me smile. If you read this, put your own on your blog or somewhere and then it gets passed on – see. Then more people are happy which is what we need in the world.

ok my 5 things that make me smile

1. Sunshine

2. When a really great song comes on the radio and you can turn the volume up

3. A nice cup of tea with a friend or two

4. Seeing a lovely VW campervan driving past

5. My cat coming to wake me up in the morning.

Right – pass it on!
